Paul says that Jesus “cleansed by the washing of the word.” (Eph 5:26). The parallel for husbands is that they are responsible for the spiritual direction and well-being of the home.

Marriage counselors hear frequently that one of a wife’s greatest desires is for her husband to initiate regular times of devotions and prayer in the family. For many men , doing so is tragically difficult.

Whatever the reason, whether it is apathy, pride, or insecurity, husbands need to overcome their resistances and spiritually lead their families.

What is Leadership through Servanthood? One might ask “What does loving through service mean in practical terms?” It means that a husband is loving his wife when he: goes shopping with her (and doesn’t’ grumble about it), changes the light bulbs in the house when they go out, makes up the bed, leaves her notes and cards communicating his love and appreciation of her, meets her at the door when she comes home, asks her if he can get her anything from the kitchen when he gets up to fill his own glass while they watch their favorite television show, willingly goes to a movie she likes, puts the toilet seat down and replaces the toilet paper , trims the hedges and keeps the yard neat , … get the Idea?

In John 13, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and in so doing, taught us the true meaning of leadership through servant hood. “Husband, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” Ephesians 5:25
